The fuel system begins at the fuel tank filler neck and ends at the injectors. Along the way the fuel is pressurized, filtered, and computer regulated so the ideal quantity mixes with air for combustion. The fuel tank is more than just a reservoir for fuel. On most vehicles it houses the fuel pump and it also may have valves and sensors for the EVAP system. Fuel tanks can be made of metal or plastic, but the retaining straps are made of metal. Metal tanks and straps can corrode from exposure to water, road salt, and debris, possibly causing a dangerous fuel leak. We have the replacement tanks and straps that will make your vehicle safe again.

The electric fuel pump is submerged in fuel inside the tank, attached to a module or hanger assembly that also includes a float and sending unit that supplies fuel level information to the dash gauge. A strainer is attached to the pump to filter the fuel. The strainer is your fuel system’s first line of defense, and if it fails or becomes clogged, the pump can be damaged and/or fuel pressure can be diminished, which could cause a no start or driveability problem. No worries though, as we have replacement pumps, modules, hanger assemblies and sending units for every application.

While some vehicles rely on the fuel pump strainer alone for filtration, most cars and trucks have a replaceable in-line filter located under the vehicle or in the engine compartment. Unlike an air filter, you can’t see inside a fuel filter to judge its condition, so it’s best to replace it according to the vehicle manufacturer’s suggested maintenance intervals. While performing this maintenance, it’s a good idea to inspect the fuel lines and hoses, as these can corrode, crack and cause leaks.

The number of fuel lines on many vehicles has been reduced by “returnless” fuel injection systems. Instead of a fuel pressure regulator on the engine and a return line to send excess fuel back to the tank, these systems have a regulator mounted on the fuel pump or the Engine Control Module (ECM) controls fuel flow. Fuel injectors spray pressurized fuel into the engine in response to commands from the ECM. Each injector contains an electric solenoid that, when turned on, lifts a valve off its seat and the injector sprays fuel. The injector sprays fuel as long as it is commanded by the ECM.
