The catalytic converter consists of a substrate encased in a cylindrical stainless steel enclosure. The actual catalysts from which the component gets its name are precious metals like rhodium, platinum and palladium, which are applied to the surface of the substrate. These convert hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide and water, and reduce oxides of nitrogen emissions.
